One of the most embarrassing, chaotic, and deeply disturbing structural failures in European history happened to a room full of medieval billionaires. 🏰💩

In July 1184, King Henry VI of Germany held a grand imperial court at the Petersberg Citadel in Erfurt to settle a bitter political feud between a local archbishop and a landgrave. The event attracted dozens of high-ranking nobles, knights, and royals from across the Holy Roman Empire, all dressed in their heaviest, most expensive ceremonial chainmail and plate armor.

The Horror

The meeting was held on the second floor of a grand monastery building. As more and more heavily armored elites crowded into the room to watch the trial, the old wooden floorjoists began to groan under the massive, localized weight. Suddenly, the entire floor violently snapped and caved in.

To make matters worse, the floor directly beneath them also failed under the impact. The nobles plummeted straight down into the lowest level of the monastery—which happened to be the massive, deep, and liquid-filled underground latrine cesspit that hadn’t been cleaned in years. Over 60 counts, barons, and high-ranking knights tragically drowned or suffocated in the human waste. The King only survived because he happened to be sitting in a stone window alcove in the corner when the center of the room dissolved into chaos.

The Modern Relic

You can visit the exact, historic hill where this bizarre tragedy unfolded at the Petersberg Citadel in Erfurt, Germany. While the original monastery layout has changed over the centuries, the massive stone complex and the historic site of St. Peter’s Church still dominate the skyline. Walking through the cold, echoey stone courtyards gives you a deeply surreal perspective on the precise spot where Europe’s highest nobility met the absolute lowest, most undignified end imaginable.
