The Nobleman Who Charted Stars With A Metal Nose

A duel over a maths dispute cost him part of his face — and centuries later scientists opened his tomb to learn how he really died.

Tycho Brahe was one of the strangest and most brilliant figures of the Renaissance — a wealthy Danish nobleman who turned an island into a laboratory, built observatories that looked like castles, and charted the positions of hundreds of stars more precisely than anyone before the telescope. His measurements, taken with huge brass instruments and the naked eye, would later let his assistant Johannes Kepler derive the laws of planetary motion. But Tycho himself lived a life that looked more like weird fiction than sober science.

As a young man studying at university, he got into a furious argument with another noble student, Manderup Parsberg, over who had calculated a planetary position correctly. Honour was at stake. They fought a duel in the dark. Parsberg’s sword sliced through the bridge of Tycho’s nose, shearing off a chunk of bone and flesh. For the rest of his life Tycho wore a prosthetic nose — long thought to be made of silver or gold, but when his body was exhumed, chemical tests found traces of copper and zinc at the wound site, revealing that it was brass.

THE HORROR In October 1601, Tycho attended a lavish banquet at the court of Emperor Rudolf II in Prague, where he served as Imperial Astronomer. According to the story recorded by Kepler, Tycho followed strict table etiquette: he refused to leave the feast to relieve himself, holding his urine out of politeness. After the dinner he developed excruciating pain, could barely pass any urine, and over the next eleven days he grew delirious and swollen with agony. He died on 24 October 1601, at just 54.

The legend that grew up around his death was grotesque and unforgettable: that his bladder had literally burst because he was too well‑mannered to excuse himself from the table. For centuries people repeated the warning — “don’t end up like Tycho Brahe” — whenever they got up from a long dinner.

But another, darker theory crept in. Tycho was an alchemist and used mercury in his experiments. Tests in the 1990s on hairs from his moustache, taken from his grave during an earlier exhumation in 1901, showed unusually high levels of mercury. Some historians argued he had been poisoned — either accidentally by self‑medication, or deliberately, perhaps by rivals or even on orders from the Danish king. Others suspected murder tied to court intrigues and jealousies.

The result was a scientific cold case. Had Tycho Brahe died because his bladder burst at a banquet? Had mercury killed him? Or had someone slipped poison into the glass of the man who had mapped the heavens?

THE MODERN RELIC In November 2010, an international team of Danish and Czech scientists opened Tycho Brahe’s tomb in the Church of Our Lady Before Týn by Prague’s Old Town Square. They exhumed his skeleton and the remains of his famous brass nose, and took tiny samples of his bones, teeth and beard to subject them to modern chemical analysis.

Over the next few years those samples were scanned, irradiated and tested in labs in Denmark and the Czech Republic. Researchers used CT and X‑rays, proton microprobe scans and radiochemical neutron activation to measure mercury in his hair, and cold vapour atomic absorption to test his bones.

The results were decisive. Mercury was present — but at levels normal for someone of his era who had some contact with the metal. His bones showed no sign of a heavy mercury load in the last five to ten years of his life. Hair from his beard reflected the last eight weeks: mercury concentrations were at the high end of normal eight weeks before he died, then fell to the low end in his final two weeks. There was no spike that could be a fatal dose. In the words of the lead researcher, “It is impossible that Tycho Brahe could have been murdered” by mercury poisoning.

The poison theory was quietly ruled out. What remained was the old medical story: a catastrophic urinary infection or kidney failure after that banquet, not a royal assassination. The bladder‑burst legend may be exaggerated — doctors note actual ruptures are rare — but the symptoms described by Kepler match a severe urinary or kidney crisis that could indeed have killed him.

Today, Tycho Brahe’s body lies again beneath the floor of Our Lady Before Týn, his brass‑marked nose reburied after its brief visit to the lab. His instruments and manuscripts live on in museums, and his name sits on craters and asteroids. The man whose duel sliced off his nose, whose banquet likely destroyed his kidneys, and whose grave was opened four centuries later for one last experiment, ended up with his bones treated like data — a relic turned back into evidence.

You can walk into that Gothic church in Prague now, stand over the stone that covers his tomb, and know that beneath your feet lies the skeleton that once wore a brass nose and watched the heavens — exhumed, tested, and finally left in peace.
